8. Tennessee's Lost City of Loyston
Location: Tennessee's Loyston1894 is the year.
The amount spent to build Norris Lake was $36 million.
The entire story of the Tennessee town of Loyston is peculiar. It was established in 1894 and given the name John Loy in honor of a local merchant. Up until 1936, when Norris Lake was purposefully created by flooding, it was a town. In addition to destroying homes, mills, churches, schools, and other structures, the flood compelled the town's population to relocate.

The former town is now hidden deep beneath the Loyston Sea, as the inhabitants refer to it. New Loyston was formed by the displaced former residents who were assisted by the government in moving. Even still, it seems surreal to consider that a whole town might vanish and be buried in an instant.
