One of the most well-known philanthropic endeavors of renowned twentieth-century Welshman Baron David Davies was the construction of the vacation getaway St. Athan Boys' Village. Davies came up with the concept in the 1920s to provide a means of escape from the filthy and contaminated air of the surrounding towns for the children of coal miners.

Thus, he constructed the village, which was adjacent to the beach's clean air. Dorms, a restaurant hall, a fitness center, workshops, a church, a swimming pool, and other recreational amenities were all part of the retreat. Later, as coal mining in Wales' valleys dwindled, the village began to deteriorate. In 1990, the now-vacant retreat was forced to close after it entered administration.
