Five years after the Higdon was first constructed in 1878 as a home, it was purchased by a prosperous family. The Higdons converted it into a hotel, catering mostly to railroad managers and supervisors. The Higdon Hotel closed for business in the 1930s when passenger trains stopped passing through.
